J. Johnson PB: $9.95 /9781682630075 Asking for help is only the first step. Jennifer can’t go on like this—binging, purging, starving, and all while trying to appear like she’s got it all together. But when she finally confesses her secret to her parents, and is hospitalized at the Samuel Tuke Center, her journey is only beginning. During Jennifer’s intake meeting at the hospital, Jennifer’s mother explains that she and Jennifer’s father do not believe that their daughter has an eating disorder. Jennifer, however, reveals that she has been exhibiting signs of disordered eating for over two years. After reviewing the answers to a long serious of questions, Wexler concludes that Jennifer should be hospitalized. Jennifer’s mother is stunned by her responses, and Wexler’s conclusion. Once admitted to the hospital, Jennifer meets a variety of patients, nurses, and doctors She bonds with Monica, an older bulimic who introduces Jennifer to the world of the EDU, its patients and staff, and the rules and standards. Monica, a former nursing student, seems to know everything and everyone and Jennifer becomes dependent on her counsel and support. Jennifer also becomes close with Dr. Prakash, her main psychiatrist, and Nurse Chuck, her secondary nurse. But others patients and staff are quite hard to deal with, including Heather, her sullen roommate, and “Nurse Ratched,” as Jennifer dubs the primary nurse. Ratched is suspicious of Jennifer and her commitment to the program, which is unusual; she monitors her weight, her food intake, and her behavior to an obsessive degree, and frequently accuses Jennifer of wrong-doing. On occasion, Dr. Prakash and other patients and staff are forced to intercede. During treatment, Jennifer is forced to recognize the damaging effects of her desire to keep the peace and make everyone happy. She must also convince her parents that her problems are real, and make them see how their behavior has influenced the entire family dynamic—anger, overcompensation, suppression of feelings. Jennifer learns to recognize her flawed relationships with food, friends, and family and how each is healthy or unhealthy—and to develop the skills she needs recognized the difference. She has to learn to trust herself and her own instincts, but that’s easier than it sounds. She has to believe—after many years of being a believarexic. Soon Jennifer learns that others have been keeping secrets: Heather has been stealing from her; Monica is not working the program and soon checks herself out and resumes her destructive behavior. And the reason behind Nurse Ratched’s intense focus on Jennifer is revealed, when she herself is hospitalized for disordered behavior. The staff of the EDU has been enabling her behavior and overlooking her unfair treatment of certain patients. As Jennifer’s weight increases and mental health improves, she approaches her release date from the program and must learn how to manage life outside. She will have support from doctors, family, and friends, but ultimately, she must depend upon herself. During her last night at Samuel Tuke Center, Nurse Chuck and others arrange a surprise dance party for her and she says goodbye in style. Using her trademark dark humor and power emotion, JJ Johnson tells an inspiring story that is based on her own experience when she was hospitalized for an eating disorder as a teenager. The innovative format, in which Jennifer’s story is told through both blank verse and prose, with changes in tense and voice, and using forms, workbooks, and journal entries, mirrors the protagonist’s progress toward a healthy body and mind.
