ENVIRON 790: Secret Weapons of Success Construction Instructor: Prof. Joseph F. Bachman Executive in Residence, Natural Resources Finance 4105 Grainger Hall +1(919) 613-8034 Office Hours: TBD Summary ENV 790 (Secret Weapons) seeks to equip students with frameworks, methodologies and knowledge that will advance their immediate effectiveness in today’s complex modern organizations. Management science has run the spectrum over the last three decades from strictly quantitative regimes dictating choices to softer approaches taking a softer “self-help” path more focused on the development of the individual manager. Texts by management “gurus” have long been the fodder for business pop culture. While not all of this work is useful to the modern-day manager, familiarity is critical as it becomes part of the language of business and familiarity, if not fluency can mean the difference between being part of a conversation or being left out. Furthermore, there several points of wisdom in these works and this course attempts to extract and process them in ways that increase the managerial effectiveness of the individual student. This course seeks to familiarize students early in their career with this conversation helping them develop both an awareness and vocabulary that will help elevate both their consciousness and their effectiveness with regards to management. While students already get an active exposure to working in teams at Nicholas, this course seeks to prepare students for succeeding in a wider variety of organizations and situations. The course is designed to introduce concepts, readings and management structures from a perspective of critical thought and inviting students to think about developing their own sense of management style. This approach seeks to move the management discussion away from the self-help, popular flavor of the month discussion towards a more practical, actionable and personal style created by the individual. The class will focus on three areas of managerial capability: Personal Awareness, Negotiation, and Management and Leadership. All three areas can be seen as dynamic, softer areas of business effectiveness that are learned over time, often through experience. The curriculum draws upon 25 years of experience of the primary instructor and what he has gleaned not only from the texts utilized but from application in a variety of individual contributor, managerial and leadership roles held over the period. It attempts to crystalize insights, tools and methods in each of these areas. Format ENV 686 is a multiple format class consisting of a foundation common reading that the class will progress through together. Lectures and discussions covering the reading will be conducted by the primary instructor (Professor Bachman). The course will also make primary use of cases and simulations covering a variety of topics in the context of the weekly readings. Readings will be centered around several popular management books, covering one approximately every two weeks for a total of six for the term. Primary readings (the books) will be supplemented by articles from current business journals. ENVIRON 790: Secret Weapons of Success Construction Prerequisites ENV 686 is designed to be a gateway course for students about to (re)enter the workforce, regardless of their path or focus at the Nicholas School. It is designed to be primarily a second-year course. As such, there are no specific prerequisites for the course, save for each student’s progression through their program and the prior experiences they bring with them. Questions regarding background or suitability for the course should be raised with the primary instructor. Deliverables Students are expected to keep and submit a running journal of learning and reflection as the class progresses throughout the term. They will be expected to share a summary of this with both small groups of their classmates, as well as the primary instructor midway and at the end of the class. A summary paper and presentation relating lessons of the class to each student’s current and prospective careers are the capstones of the course and thus the primary deliverables. Evaluation As the class is primarily focused on individual growth, the journal and final paper/presentation will be a significant indicator of progress made. As many lessons will take place via short case or simulation. Performance in the course will be designated by a letter grade. As all such grades are meant purely to be constructive and are, at the end of the day, a subjective exercise, the following breakdown will be used in determining the final grade: 20% Individual Weekly Assignments 20% Class Contribution and Engagement 20% Group Contribution and Assignments 40% Running Journal and Final Written Assignment and Presentation Text, Readings, Resources The primary texts for the course include the following works.
