Answer: LILA is a story that has been with me for many years. The characters are a composite of the people I grew up and the stories I listened to. Growing up is at best complex, growing up as children of Holocaust survivors is even more so. Some of us were able to escape the shadow of our parents suffering, for others their experiences led us into an early maturity. DBPL: How long did it take from first word to publication? Answer: Seven years. DBPL: What is your favorite part of the writing process? Answer: Being alone. DBPL: What was your favorite book when you were a child? Answer: Heidi and Little Women. DBPL: Are you working on anything new? Answer: I started to write a play a few years ago exploring the relationship with my mother set in the safety of movies theaters, over a period of 40 years. It was only at the movies, in the dark that she would tell me the stories I so wanted to hear. She would speak quietly, looking straight ahead, and speak about her parents, her childhood, her brother and sister, her fears, her loves, her dreams. Through the years, I would then tell her about mine. We went to the movies together from the time I was eight till she died at 80. We always held hands throughout. DBPL: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Answer: Never give up!
