SPGR-7740-R01 SPIRITUAL DIRECTION PRACTICUM 1 Fall 2015 (3 Credits) Fordham Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education Instructor: Sr. Donna Fannon, MHSH One Saturday per month (9:00AM-4:00PM) at the University Church Basement Lounge, Rose Hill Campus Dates: Aug. 29; Sept. 26; Oct. 24; Nov. 21, Dec. 12 (snow cancellation make-up date) Eight 1-hour Conference Calls (Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00pm) Dates: Sept. 2, 16, 30; Oct. 7, 21; Nov. 4, 18; Dec. 2 OUTCOMES: 1. Students will practice listening and empathic skills necessary as a spiritual director, both within the practicum setting and with spiritual directees . 2. Students will discern their call to spiritual direction. 3. Students will integrate their theological knowledge with their living faith. SYLLABUS Saturday Sessions: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM August 29 Recovering the Activity of God in One’s Own Story Looking at God’s Activity in Another Allowing God to be God Sept. 26 Developing the Contemplative Gift Seeing with the Eyes of the Heart Desiring and Being Desired Oct. 24 Exploring the Experience of God in Scripture Exploring the Experience of God in Imagination Nov. 21 Staying with the Experience of God Waiting, Repetition Conference Calls: The content for the conference calls will include discussion of articles and selected chapters from the book list, along and/or a continuation of conversations from the Saturday sessions. Requirements: • Attendance/participation at all Sessions and Conference Calls. • Spiritual Autobiography due before the first session (Guidelines will be provided). • Personal Interview (via phone) with the Instructor prior to the first session. • Reflection Paper due at the end of the semester. • Participants must be receiving spiritual direction monthly. • Begin or continue directing 2 or more persons every 3-4 weeks during the duration of the practicum. • Meet with a supervisor regularly using a verbatim (minimum of 3 meetings per semester) • You must attend all Saturday sessions and miss no more than one conference call in order to earn credit. • Proof of liability insurance coverage as a spiritual director must be provided in writing to Dean Patrick Holt <[email protected]> and Sister Donna Fannon <[email protected]> by August 15. Sr. Donna has spent 25 years in campus ministry where her focus was Ignatian Spirituality and the RCIA. Currently Sr. Donna works with the Jesuit Collaborative on special projects and directs 30-day and 8-day retreats.
